About Us
The Community String Project (CSP), a 501(c)(3) non-Âprofit organization, began in July of 2009 with the goal of serving all youth in the East Bay area, regardless of income, through an innovative, school-based music program centered on string instruments. Remarkably, to date (winter, 2012) the CSP has grown to serve 26 adults and 72 students, 40% meeting the criteria for subsidized instruction.
Provides Opportunities for Students and Adults
Students in Grades 3-5 have the opportunity to play the violin while older students may also choose the viola or cello. Besides the value of learning how to play an instrument (which has been shown to increase academic performance), students also benefit from being involved in a supportive activity that assists with dropout prevention, fosters community engagement, and increases self-esteem.
In addition to providing a subsidized child/ youth program, adults are offered an instructional program that provides a performance vehicle for new string players, role models for younger students, and a revenue stream that helps fund scholarships.
Instruction and an instrument are provided free of charge for students who cannot afford the instructor’s fees and the rental or purchase of an instrument. These yearly per person costs are approximately $360 for instruction and $200 for a violin. Currently, 40% of the youth being served by the CSP meet the criteria for subsidized instruction.
Our Needs
Targeting at-risk children and youth through teachers and administration, the Project anticipates adding 10-12 students annually. In light of the Rhode Island economy, however, CSP is preparing for an increase in both subsidy requests and general participation as parents and educators seek meaningful and cost effective community-based programs for their children.
